Jungle Bubble

Jungle Bubble Video Clips.

Presenting "Jungle Bubble", my entry into the Aquatic Gardeners' Association 11th Annual Aquascaping Contest (2010). It's about 31 liters in total volume (I think I said 35 by mistake) and 40 cm in diameter. This bowl requires no filtration, as the plants provide it themselves. The water is still crystal clear after a week. Apart from light (11W fluorescent and 4W LED, both from IKEA, 13 hours/day), CO2 (about 0.7 bubbles/second for 10 hours/day), and Tetro Pro Colour food, I add only Seachem Potassium, Iron, and Trace, in doses of about 50-100% of advised levels, once or twice a week, depending on plant health and algae level. Algae does slowly accumulate as pinpricks on the glass, which I remove during my weekly maintenance cycle, along with any plant leaves that I choose to trim. I change about 80% of the water per week, not because it needs so much, but because it allows me access to the plants at the bottom of the bowl for trimming. Fish: 3 cardinal tetras, 2 ember tetras, 2 blue ram cichlids, 2 otocinclus catfish, and 2 Yamato (Amano) shrimp. I feed them once a day in an amount that can be eaten in about 10 minutes. I have no heater, as I live in the tropics. (Contrary to what I said in the video, I suppose my temperature is stable enough year-round, although I don't have a way to place the bowl in the sun and keep it cool enough.) A word of warning: as you can see in my other video about silvertip tetras (which were sent back to the store for bad behavior), this ...

How to Choose the Most Effective Refrigerator Water Filter on the Market

How to Choose the Most Effective Refrigerator Water Filter on the Market

Water Filter

When you go to buy a new refrigerator, it's very likely that you will find at least one that has a water filter built into it. In today's world, the reality of harmful chemicals in our water is evidenced by expensive bottled water just about anywhere you go. As the need for fresh healthy water on the go has increased, so have the ways that filtered water can be made more convenient.

There are many refrigerator water filters on the market today, but the difference in quality has changed drastically in the last few years. For the most part, they all use GAC (Granular Activated Carbon). Yet, not all fridge filters are the same. For instance, the AQ-7000 by Aquasana has earned the right to be called the most effective in-line water filter on the market because of the quality of the filter media and combination of the most effective technologies.

A High-Quality Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Filter Is a Must
A GAC carbon filter has the ability to absorb many harmful chemicals and is recognized by the EPA as the best available technology for organic chemical removal. Activated carbon is exposed to high temperatures causing micro pores to form. This newly created surface can effectively filter out a wide variety of contaminants, such as chlorine, pesticides, trihalomethanes (THMs) and other chemicals linked to cancer. GAC also removes bad tastes and odors.

The are 3 distinct technologies to look for in a refrigerator water filter. They are mechanical filtration (filtration down to 0.5 microns), adsorption (contaminants bond chemically to the surface of the GAC filter medium) and ion exchange (replaces harmful lead ions with healthful potassium ions).

1. Sub-micron Filtration
A high-quality in-line refrigerator filter should contain a highly porous surface. One of the more expensive and highest performing materials is a coconut shell carbon block. The filter should have the capacity for 0.5 or less sub-micron filtration. This allows for the effective removal of chlorine resistant microscopic organisms like cryptosporidium and giardia. Low cost carbon is less effective and needs to be replaced more often. Look for a filter that will last at least 6 months.

2. Adsorption
While sub-micron filtration works by physically blocking contaminants, adsorption is a process where the carbon filter actually attracts a variety of dissolved contaminants and they are held or adsorbed on the surface of the carbon particles. Unlike pitcher water filters like Brita, a fridge water filter has a lot more carbon to go around. The large surface area means that the water contact time is longer. The result is that greater adsorption of various chemicals can take place. Filter systems like the AQ7000 use a highly compressed carbon media to filter out chlorine, lead, VOCs (Volatile Organic Chemicals), THMs, cysts, turbidity (sediment level) and most other tap water contaminants.

3. Ion Exchange
The final filtration technology is ion exchange. During this stage, lead is filtered out by a complex ion exchange process where lead ions are replaced with potassium ions. This process is extremely effective for lead and heavy metal reduction. It also enhances your waters natural mineral balance. Potassium is one of the minerals that give your water its natural spring water taste, as well as a neutral pH. A coconut shell carbon block can be impregnated with potassium charged microporous zeolite to achieve this effect.

Most refrigerator filters come in a standard size and can provide water for refrigerators, ice makers and coolers. You get healthy water for drinking, pets, cooking, ice and beverages - and you get it quickly. They are also great for RVs, water fountains, and can even work under the sink. For most refrigerator filters, no tools are needed.

When you buy a refrigerator water filter, make sure it has the 3 technologies listed above. Now that you have taken the time to learn what goes into making the most effective in-line fridge water filter on the market, you should find out 3 more things. Learn about the water filter company's guarantee, successful track record and recognition (awards) by industry experts. In a world with literally thousands of chemicals making their way into your water supply, you need to insist on the most advanced breakthroughs in water filtration. If you don't, you are leaving your families health to chance.

I have Fluval U2 filter and I'm showing just how simple it is to set it up even with one hand, while I'm doing the video :) It has 3 year warranty, it's completely silent, you can adjust the water flow, depending on the type of fish you have or the power of filtration you need. You can either use it in aquariums or terrariums. It has easy cleaning system: just flip it front and take out the foams, the bracket that holds the filter in place, stays inside the whole time. Enjoy it, I recommend it! My tank is 10 gallons, but I like to have filter that is for a bit bigger tanks.

Phosphate Water Filter

Phosphate Water Filter

Water Filter

A phosphate liquid filter is used when there are high iron levels in the water. A phosphate water filter will deactivate the iron ion and prevent it from discoloring the water. It will also prevent the problems with washing clothes that high iron levels present.

There are some problems with the phosphate and liquid filter system. If the deactivated iron form is left for a long time it will break down and insoluble iron will get into the water. This will cause problems for the water system. This only happens though when you have a water storage tank in a remote area where it is untouched for a long time.

A phosphate filter will also inhibit scale formation. That is to say, the pipes that carry the water will be cleaner. A phosphate liquid filter will reduce lead and copper leaching into the water supply, the filters will prevent the leaching to comply with the 1991 lead and copper law. A phosphate water filter will form a monomolecular film to inhibit rust and corrosion, this will protect the water distribution systems from repair and maintenance problems and expenses. A phosphate water filter will restrict oxygen permeation and hydrogen generation. A phosphate water filter is effective in multi-metal systems.

There are different grades of phosphate and filters. They range from food grade to industrial grade, but they all do basically the same thing. There are many companies more than willing to do all of the guess work for you, but phosphate water filtering does not seem like the best option for home usage, more so for mechanical and industrial situations where the water may be more contaminated with iron. A phosphate liquid filter is however an effective type of treatment in areas where iron is prevalent.

The Truth About the Whole House Water Filter - 5 Reasons to Have One

The Truth About the Whole House Water Filter - 5 Reasons to Have One

Water Filter

Having a water filter is no longer a luxury as it was a couple of years ago. More and more people chose to install such a water filter when they are building their home so they can benefit from clean, pure water all the time. The truth is that in today's world that is affected by pollution, having a water filter fitted in your home can save you from health issues related to un-filtered water.

There are two moments in which you can install a water filter: during the actual construction of the house or at a later moment. If you are building your home based on a very strict budget, you may choose to install the water filter later on, but this choice has several disadvantages.

There are at least five main reasons for which installing a water filter in your home during its construction is preferred to adding it later on or not installing it at all.

First of all, installing a water filter may not be a very expensive solution if you consider the overall price of the house and the benefits it offers you and your family. You can save some money in other parts of the house and install the filter when you set up the pipes and the fittings.

If you chose to install the water filter as early as possible, you can avoid it from becoming contaminated with construction debris or dangerous bacteria present during the construction period. In the same time, if the contaminated or un-pure water does not reach the pipes from your house at all, the water filter's efficiency increases. You can of course install the filter after you have completed the house, but the pipes will have been in contact with the un-pure water.

Installing the water filter very early also has the advantage of giving to use less soaps and cleaning substances to clean the pipes and the water system throughout the house.

The water filter is incredibly efficient in cleaning the water that reaches your home, so you can forget buying dozens of liters of bottled water.

By installing a water filter, you also protect your hot water heater by removing debris and impurities from reaching the heater.

There are many advantages to installing a whole house water filter and setting it up as early as possible in the construction period can avoid many issues that can appear along the way.

Learn How Important Cleaning Water Is

Learn How Important Cleaning Water Is

Water Filter

We use water for everything from - cooking, bathing, swimming, recreation, drinking, cleaning, your lawn, and our eco system. Now that you recognize how essential water is you may find it interesting or even terrible to know how little of the water transported to your home is clean.

It is general knowledge that the water standards in the U.S. are lessening. But some out there may not know why. The worst components that lend to America's worsening water standards are the inadequate and out dated water supply infrastructure for America, industrial chemical waste, and our growing population requiring more water each day.

Because of this - the healthiest method to handle this problem is to repair it yourself and make sure that you are filtering out your water before you use it by utilizing a refrigerator water filter, a filter that attaches to your faucet, below the counter water filter, or even portable sports bottle water filters. Each of these utilized by themselves or in combination will help ensure that you are obtaining clean, pure, and dependable tasting water.

For most of us the Brita refrigerator water filtration is best and a more favorable option out of the above that we named. Because most of us go to the fridge to get our drinking water and ice from the fridge door and it will be in reach for cooking usages.

With these types of refrigerator filters you can make sure that you and your kids are drinking only the best and the safest in water. If you don't use them you are risking consuming serious kinds of bacteria that have been recycled back into the water. You can taste the difference between filtered and unfiltered water. Once you try it you will not desire to go back.

I Use Reverse Osmosis Water Filters for My Beverages

I Use Reverse Osmosis Water Filters for My Beverages

Water Filter

"I were-meant for you, now you fer-ment for me" Just wasn't happening!

Who said Reverse Osmosis?

After trying many different recipes for wines, sodas, and beer - and having a struggle getting them to turn out right, I realized it was the water I was using.

My kitchen is a late 90's kitchen and has all the nice things as far as fixtures, faucets and accessories but the people who built it did not think to put in a Reverse Osmosis system.

After testing the water coming from the tap, I found it was full of hard water minerals, and Iron. So I set out on the path to concur the "problem of my brew".

It was quite the experience at first but after setting my face to solve the taste! I found it was actually quite simple.

An RO unit is a unit that filters by membrane - bacteria, sodium and most all other chemicals (fluoride, chlorine) out of your drinking water. I knew this, but did not think my tap water was that bad.

So after choosing a good three tank system, which really purifies the water, I then had the issue of where to put it. I have worked with water filters and systems and kinda always hated the industry standard which is to put the RO under the kitchen sink.

I did not care for it because it always left a mess when there were leaks. And generally ruined the bottom of the kitchen sink cabinet.

The option that I like is to put the Reverse Osmosis System in the mechanical room and then run pex lines back to whatever sink you want.

With my lower kitchen being my beverage kitchen it was not really an option to get pex through the walls or ceiling so I resolved that under the sink was my only choice.

RO units are so very nice when you can't get your drinks to taste right - you see - an RO removes the taste and the color of the water. Though it does not remove "all" the bacteria (some may get through but it is less hurtful than not having one) it does improve brew making.

Now I have enjoyed the smiles of those I invite over. I am enjoying my second batch of good brew - and gratefully - I use a Reverse Osmosis water filter for my beverages.

Water Filter Provides Safe Water Free From Arsenic

Water Filter Provides Safe Water Free From Arsenic

Water Filter

If you utilize water from a well that gathers its sources from ground water you should be concerned with arsenic.

Arsenic is a poison and can be lethal if consumed in large enough amounts. It is more poisonous than mercury.

The health concerns over ingesting arsenic range from cancer of the skin, bladder, lungs and kidneys. Skin problems have also been reported as well as problems with circulation in the extremities. The very young and older are affected the most, but any age should be concerned with drinking healthy water.

The effects of this type of poisoning can take as long as 5 to 15 years to show up. This all depends on the amount consumed and the length of time it was taken.

In some areas outside of the United States arsenic has been detected in ground water. No cases have been listed in the United States but it does not mean you should not be concerned if you consume ground water from a well.

Arsenic can occur naturally in ground water in trace amounts. Some areas can have larger percentages of concentration than others. Arsenic can cause serious health problems to people ingesting the chemical over an extended period of time.

There are water filters now on the market that can and do remove arsenic from drinking water. This is especially helpful to folks who use wells as their primary means for water.

Safe drinking water is important to the health of everyone. Families who use a well as their source of drinking water should definitely consider using a water filter to avoid all possible chemical contaminants.

finally completed, with live frogs added!!!! Many people are asking me how the tank was built, what was the background made of, and what are the plants... Well.. The plants are from Lowes, Home Depot, and an online plant distributer out of Massachusetts. The background is made from REAL cork bark purchased form THATFISHPLACE.COM in Lancaster PA. it is held in place by aquarium grade silicone, and cut to fit around the REAL rock, that acts as a waterfall. The substrate is Eco-earth on top of gravel, which sets on a PVC pipe and "eggcrate" shelf, to permit water flow. There is about 10 gallons of water in the tank, and it is circulated by two pumps, one is an under water filter (which I would not recommend) accompanied by a Fluval 101 canister, with a ball check on the return to limit the flow of the waterfall. Everything in the tank is living, and natural. nothing looks better than REAL plants in a natural setting vivarium.

Best Pitcher Water Filter

Best Pitcher Water Filter

Water Filter

When looking for the best pitcher water filter on the market, it is hard not to be drawn to products that state things such as "Improves taste and order", "most effective on the market" or "advanced filtering technology". Remember that these are typically just a clever marketing trick meant to catch your eye and make a quick sale. When looking for a reliable water pitcher filter, try and find reviews and studies that are entirely independent from their companies and affiliates.

This doesn't mean that all brand name pitcher water filters are bad. In fact the two most recommended pitcher water filters come from America's leading top filter companies.

The first is PUR's new water filter 'Pur DS-1800Z 2 Stage Water Dispenser'

With its slender shape, it can conveniently fit in your sink or refrigerator without taking up too much space. With its two-stage water filtration system, it not only removes bad tastes and odors, but removes lead, mercury, cysts, and an array of other harmful chemicals. There is also a gauge that will let you know when the filter cartage needs replacement.

The second is Brita's 2009 release of the 'Brita 42558 Aqualux drinking water pitcher'

This pitcher holds up to 48 ounces of water, making this a great filter that holds enough water for the whole family. With its advanced carbon filtration system, it removes chlorine, any lingering sediments, and unpleasant orders.

By finding the right pitcher you will insure that you will never drink unhealthy water again. So take the time to do your own research and find a product that you love for years to come.

Chlorine and Cancer: What Can a Water Filter Do for You?

Chlorine and Cancer: What Can a Water Filter Do for You?

Water Filter

Every day, cases of cancer are rising in astounding and unprecedented numbers.
While medical professionals work tirelessly to find a cure for this most deadly of
diseases, the numbers of terminally ill patients continue to climb. Although the
cure for cancer continues to elude medical professionals, it is completely within our
own power to protect our families and ourselves and to reduce our risks whenever
possible.

In recent years, individuals have begun to seriously examine known carcinogens and
to protect themselves from these cancer-causing agents. Sunscreen has become an
important defense against skin cancer, and its use is on the rise. The number of
smokers attempting to quit rises each day, precisely because of new information
about the carcinogenic nature of cigarettes.

The increase in such protective behaviors clearly indicates an increased interest in
protecting oneself from cancer risks. Still, droves of people continue to use and
drink unfiltered tap water, not knowing about or not believing in the insidious
nature of this substance. Whether we like it or not, the water that emerges from our
taps, however pristine it may appear, is filled with carcinogenic compounds. A
simple water filter can now serve as a valuable safeguard against cancer.

Chlorine and Tap Water:
Untreated tap water is filled with such dangerous contaminants as nitrate, arsenic,
microorganisms, and chemicals from pesticide runoff. Once this water reaches a
municipal treatment plant, many contaminants are removed. However, one of the
most dangerous contaminants is actually added to drinking water as a part of the
treatment process.

Chlorine, added as an inexpensive and effective drinking water disinfectant, is also a
known poison to the body. It is certainly no coincidence that chlorine gas was used
with deadly effectiveness as a weapon in the First World War. This gas was known
to severely burn the lungs and other body tissues when inhaled; it is no less
powerful when ingested by mouth. Each day, as we use unfiltered tap water, we are
effectively pouring bleach into our water before we drink it.

This poisonous chemical, accompanied by its byproducts, is now known to cause at
least three types of cancers, among other serious health problems. The U.S. Council
of Environmental Quality recently released a report stating that the risk of cancer is
93% higher among those drinking chlorinated water than among those not drinking
chlorinated water! In the following paragraphs, you can read about the specific
cancer risks of chlorinated water and learn how to protect your family and yourself
from this insidious poison.

Bladder and Rectal Cancer:
Chlorine has long been known to be a leading cause of bladder and rectal cancer.
Once in water, chlorine interacts with organic compounds to create trihalomethanes
(THMs). These THMs are particularly harmful to the body when ingested. When
taken into the body, THMs encourage the production of free radicals. These free
radicals proceed to destroy or damage vital cells in the body. Because so much of
the water we drink ends up in the bladder and/or rectum, ingestions of THMs in
drinking water is particularly damaging to these organs. THMs cause innumerable
cases of bladder and rectal cancer each year.

Bladder and rectal cancer occur when malignant cells, often created by THMs, infect
the inner tissues of the particular organ. Once they have taken hold in the bladder
or rectum, the malignant cells can isolate themselves in the infected area or they
can spread to infect other areas of the body, potentially causing more deadly forms
of cancer. Each year, 13,000 new cases of bladder cancer are diagnosed in women
while 37,000 new cases are diagnosed in men. Of these 50,000 new cases each
year, slightly more than 20% of individuals will die from the disease. For rectal
cancer, more than 40,000 new cases are diagnosed each year and approximately
55% of those individuals diagnosed will die from the disease.

Ironically, one of the best means of protection against these two types of cancer is
drinking plenty of fluids. However, drinking larger amounts of contaminated water
only exacerbates the risk.

Breast Cancer:
Breast cancer is the newest type of cancer to be connected to ingestion of
chlorinated water. Breast cancer affects one out of every eight women in the United
States alone, and it kills approximately _ of its victims.

Recent research has linked this deadly cancer to a buildup of chlorine compounds in
the breast tissue. In a shocking study conducted in Hartford, Connecticut,
researchers found that "women with breast cancer have 50% to 60% higher levels of
organochlorines (chlorination byproducts) in their breast tissue than women without
breast cancer." While chlorine can make its way into our bodies in several ways,
there is no means of access more common or more frequent than the ingestion of
common, unfiltered tap water.

A Simple Solution:
One preventive solution to these three deadly cancers could not be simpler. If
chlorinated drinking water is a leading cause of cancer, then the obvious method of
reducing one's risk of cancer is to refrain from drinking chlorinated water. We
cannot choose whether or not to drink water, but we can choose the type of water
we allow into our bodies.

Municipal water treatment plants add chlorine to water to help make it cleaner and
more pure, but once that chlorine has performed its function, there is certainly no
reason for it to continue its deadly presence in drinking water. A simple home
water filter removes chlorine and its byproducts from drinking water, producing
clean, pure drinking water that can also serve as a useful protection against cancer.
Water filters are one of the only methods of water purification capable of removing
chlorine.

So, what can a water filter do for you? The answer is simple but extremely valuable.
A water filter can protect an individual from cancer, one of the deadliest killers of
the 20th century.
