Freshwater mussels are one of the few animals to improve our water quality. Who live in many streams and rivers, and filter algae, bacteria and other small particles in the water, making clean drinking water and recreational facilities such as swimming and fishing. If the freshwater mussels in a river is usually means that the ecosystem is healthy. Like a canary in a coal mine, which serve as an indicator because it can not tolerate poor water quality anddisappear from polluted waters. Virginia has over 81 different species of seafood, with 37 species at risk. This is a short video clip from the 3 rd Annual Mussel Festival held recently in Bath County, to educate landowners and the public about the importance of these animals in our streams and rivers.
